Tinctures

A tincture is a mix of a liquid (usually alcohol) and herbs. Why alcohol? For its efficiency at extracting the herbal properties we’re trying to access as well as preserving their potency. Think of tinctures as herbal concentrations—that’s why you only need to take a small amount. At Wild Apothecary we make our tinctures with premium vodka in order to not distract from the flavor of the herbs—because while we love mezcal and gin, we think they belong in a cocktail, not a tincture. An elixir is a similar concept, but is most often made with brandy (like the ones from Wild Apothecary) as well as honey

If you’re often on the go, you’ll love tinctures and elixirs for their efficiency and for how easy they are to travel with!

Frequent Questions

Wondering about the best way to take your tincture or elixir? Tinctures and elixirs can be taken directly from the bottle, followed by a sip of water, but you can also add yours to a glass of water, tea or juice to dilute the sometimes strong taste. Remember to give the bottle a gentle shake before taking, since some natural separation can occur

What about the alcohol content? Tinctures and elixirs contain alcohol, albeit very small amounts considering the serving size. While most don’t mind this, if you’d rather keep things as alcohol free as possible, you can add your drops to a glass of hot, but not boiling, water. After sitting for five minutes, most of the alcohol will evaporate but the herbal properties will remain

How much should you take? Usually around half of the dropper, or 1 ml, 1-3 times a day. A general guideline is to take the smallest amount while still feeling a positive effect, so start with once a day and gradually work yourself up to a serving that feels good to you. How often you take a tincture or elixir of course also depends on if you are taking it for a longterm effect, such as sleep support or brain health, versus for an acute issue like promoting relief of congestion or easing the nastiness of a hangover

Herbal Powders

Herbs can also be dried and turned into powder - perfect for adding to smoothies, cereals, yogurt, or pill capsules. Wild Apothecary herbal powders contain a variety of herbs known as adaptogens, some of which are quite rare. As the name suggests, this category of herbs and plants help your body and mind adapt to and cope with the various inputs and stressors of daily life—how awesome is that?! But as we learned in biology class, adaptations take time. While your body will benefit immediately from the immune supporting properties of these awesome herbs, embrace this journey with patience and give yourself some time to start feeling the stress relief and increased sense of energy, calm, clarity and grounding. You’ll probably need around 4-6 weeks of daily use for each blend to lay the foundation it needs; then with continued use the effects will only get better!

Balms and Skin Care

Ingestion isn’t the only way to benefit from the power of herbs--applying them externally offers a whole new array of benefits. This is one of the most exciting properties of herbs--their versatility! Wild Apothecary balms are made with responsibly sourced beeswax and many of our balms and skin care products also contain top quality essential oils. Please note that the high concentration levels of essential oils can cause sensitivity in some individuals, so we recommend doing a "spot test" on your skin before liberal use.  Keep products out of hot places (such as the glovebox of your car) and direct sunlight to avoid melting and spoiling
